Words of Inspiration
Frank McCourt's book 'Teacher Man' (2005) has been a real source of inspiration to me as a teacher. The honest account of his growth as a teacher over the course of his thirty-year career speaks to his talent and passion for teaching. In an interview prior to the publishing of this book, he shared one of his teaching mantras with the interviewer. He stated that 'teaching without learning isn't really teaching' (Dialogue 2002, Idaho PBS). This is the same way that I approach teaching. All members of a class, both instructor and learners, have something to learn from their fellow participants. Learning and teaching is a process of give and take where instructors and learners negotiate their roles in the classroom.
